Each year there are numerous accidents and fatalities around swimming pools. Families still install them without thinking much about this side of things, simply wanting a fun way to escape the heat. Pools are great and there is no reason not to get one, however make sure your entire family knows how to act safely around them.
The first rule is to never let anybody swim alone. It is also a good idea to never swim alone. Every swimmer should have a buddy. In ground pools pose a greater danger because it is easy to simply trip and fall without meaning to. With this in mind it is wise to fence in your pool and make sure your children never play around it on their own.
No running is an obvious rule that you see at every public pool, you should have the same rule, there should also never be any reason to play around with any tricycles or bikes by the poolside.
You should have a ladder that pulls up and locks as well as a fence for an above ground pool. Check your ladder on a regular schedule to be sure that it is still attached securely. With an above ground pol, you should also avoid walking around or sitting on the sides and edges. This can damage the pool causing it to collapse and also raises the possibility of injury resulting from falling to the ground.
You will also have to make sure you keep the pool properly maintained, in relevance to the pumps, filters and other moving parts. If these parts of your pool are not properly cared for, it could result in electrocution.
You need also be careful with the chemicals and products you use for the pools upkeep, such as chlorine, make sure it is kept in a safe place and out of reach of your kids.
Anybody who already has a swimming pool will be aware of the maintenance that it requires. Pools that are not correctly maintained will attract a host of insects that can carry and pass on diseases, such as mosquitoes.
You may think this is blowing everything out of proportion and is simple scare mongering, however believe me when I tell you it isn’t. Pools are amazing things to own on those long hot sunny days, however the fun can quickly sour if you don’t look after them properly and enforce the right safety precautions.
