If you have children, elderly, or pets in your home and a pool in your back yard, then you need to build a fence around it for safety. Find out how to install your own pool fence easily with these instructions. Some positions such as foster homes and in home daycares require pool safety fencing for certification. You can do it yourself with a little time and effort and nominal expense. It will save money as opposed to having it installed by a professional.
Step 1
Draw up a plan for your pool fence on graph paper or on your computer so you will know exactly what fence pieces and accessories you need to purchase. Most fence items can be purchased at your local hardware or home improvement store. The special childproof safety latches can be bought online. See the link in the resources at the bottom of this article.
Step 2
Do it yourself pool fences come in 6 ft sections. You need to count up total end posts, line posts and corner posts too. Corner, End and gate posts are more heavy duty than line posts.
Step 3
You also need to determine where and how many access gates to install. All gates must have childproof accessories. Magna-Latch is the recommended and approved standard. See link resources at bottom of this article.
Step 4
Purchase the fence sections, gates, latches, posts, brackets and fasteners. Purchase cement mix if you are installing the fence over grass. The posts need to be installed on or set in cement. Ask when/where you purchase the fence what kind of hardware is needed (size and number of screws) and purchase them as well.
Step 5
Use a level and measuring tape along with a construction pencil to mark where your fence sections and posts will go. You can use spray paint to mark on grass, as it will get cut off on the next mowing.
Step 6
Dig holes where the fence posts will go over grass. The hole should be 2 feet deep and 8″ in diameter.
Step 7
Mix the cement as directed on the bag and pour in holes until level with ground (just below grass). It is best to allow it to be a little lower than ground level so grass can grow over it to hide the cement. You can always build the height of the post if needed with washers.
Step 8
Allow cement to set for 24 hours.
Step 9
Drill holes in the cement where the fence posts will go. Use the actual post as a pattern to mark where to drill the holes.
Step 10
Fasten the post bases to the cement using the hardware recommended by the seller.
Step 11
Attached the fence sections to the posts using the brackets.
Step 12
Install the gate(S) using TRU-CLOSE self closing hinges and a Magna-Latch. Follow the instructions that come with these parts.
