Heating your swimming pool can be expensive–it takes a lot of energy to raise the temperature of a large volume of water to a comfortable level, especially in colder parts of the U.S. However, there are a number of lower-cost ways by which you could heat your swimming pool and cut your heating bill.
Energy-efficient heating options for swimming pools:
Solar swimming pool heaters can be extremely cost-effective, even in climates where you might think there isn’t enough sunlight. There are a number of different types of solar heating. Most require electrical power to pump water but use less power than would be required to heat the water directly. However, you will need to put up some one time money to install the solar heaters and solar cover.
Modern gas-fired swimming pool heaters are much more energy efficient than older models, so it could pay to replace your old heater. These heaters are ideal for heating pools quickly and if you only use the pool for short spells at a time.
Heat pumps make use of the heat outside the pump rather than using energy to create heat. They use electricity to pull in warm air and, by a process of heat transference, create hot gas within coils that heat the pool’s water. This is great for swimming pools in hot climates.
Black pool tiles. If you are building a new inground swimming pool, consider black or dark-colored swimming pool tiles for the bottom of the pool. These absorb heat from the sun and you might be surprised how much they can raise the temperature of your pool.
Use a solar pool cover at night to preserve as much of the swimming pool’s heat as possible.
With an energy-efficient swimming pool heating system, you can enjoy your swimming pool for longer without worrying about the environment or the cost.
