It’s almost here! Summer and warm weather are just around the corner and for those lucky enough to have a pool right in your backyard, this means a lot of work in the upcoming months. Even after the it opens, there is much maintenance to be done throughout the summer, which can be costly if you’re not careful. One way to ensure having low monthly expenses is to make sure you have low pool evaporation by using a pool cover, which will help keep your monthly energy bills down during pool season.
Evaporation is the largest source of energy loss when operating ones pool. For each pound of eighty-degree water that evaporates, 1,048 Btu (British Thermal Unit) of heat out. This occurs whether you have an indoor or outdoor pool, the rate of evaporation simply differs. For outdoor pools, the evaporation rate depends on pool temperature, air temperature/humidity and the pool surface wind speed. Indoor pools are clearly not subjected to outdoor environment conditions but still loose evaporation with energy. Also, because the air around the indoor pool needs to be conditioned, this also will increase monthly energy costs. Using a pool cover, especially a solar pool cover, helps minimize evaporation and is the single most effective way to reduce monthly pool heating costs. They can cut water evaporation by up to 95%. By using a cover, it is possible to save 50-90% on monthly energy bills. Solar covers look similar to bubble packing material making them lightweight and easy to handle, but use a thicker grade of plastic and have UV inhibitors. Their heavy-duty material works with the sun to catch and retain heat, raising the temperature of your pool during the day and retains it at night; meaning these covers help cut your heating bill and heat your pool for FREE, extending your pool season significantly. Who doesn’t want a longer amount of time to spend in their pool? I know I wouldn’t mind it.
