One of my all time favorite memories from childhood involves bubble wrap. Who can resist bubble wrap! It’s got to be one of the best inventions ever! Everyone loves bubble wrap!
I remember the sweet rush when my parents received a package. I remember trying to be patient, but feeling antsy waiting for my parents to open the package. It was torture when they made us wait until after dinner to see what the surprise was! Parents can be so cruel! And if you were not the first in line, there was always the possibility that there would not be enough bubbles left to pop once everyone had their turn.
I would cross my fingers, hoping that the sender had used that magical plastic wrap filled with tiny, air filled pillows to cushion the item. I had no interest in what the object that was shipped actually was; the bubble wrap was more enticing. I just wanted the bubble wrap!
There are some many ways to play with it! You could pinch the tiny pillows between your fingers. Lay the sheet down and walk across it while you feel the tiny pillows burst beneath your feet, or even jump on it to get many explosions at once…. I learned early that the bubble wrap with the smaller diameter of bubbles was fun to pop between your fingers. The larger bubbles were great to walk on.
The original intent of bubble wrap was not for cushioning fragile objects. It was originally created to be textured plastic wallpaper! In 1957, the creators, engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes were looking for something that could be easily cleaned but intersting enough to decorate the walls.
Can eyou imagine having a room where the walls were covered with bubble wrap? You wouldn’t get me out of my bedroom until all the bubbles were popped!
