Swimming Pool Chemicals
Your swimming pool is not the only backyard item that will undergo spring cleaning, since many home owners have decks, landscaping and furniture that surround the centerpiece of your yard. Below is a list that combines swimming pool and backyard spring cleaning, so your entire yard will look pristine and ready for the warmer months.
- Clean Up the Lawn
Think of the lawn as a road that transports leaves, twigs and debris right into your pool water. To eliminate the need to constantly grab debris with your net, start by raking dead grass and leaves around the pool. It’s helpful to aerate the lawn before fertilizing and watering. - Spring Clean the Pool
You may have opened your swimming pool a few weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean you can slack on routine maintenance and cleaning. Run the robotic pool cleaner every so often to get rid of the film and dirt that’s too small to see. Inspect the pool for any organic or metal pool stains and treat accordingly. Keep in mind that organic and metal stains are treated differently. - Power-wash the Deck
Freezing rain and harsh weather may have done some damage to your backyard deck. A quick power-wash will remedy this issue. And it’s another step to protecting your swimming pool by cleaning the surrounding areas. A grimy deck can only encourage cloudy pool water. - Balance the Water
As part of your spring cleaning regimen, it’s ideal to balance the water. Grab your water test kit and check the chlorine, Total Alkalinity, pH, Calcium Hardness, and Cyanuric Acid levels. Once you’ve made your adjustments, run the filter overnight and check the levels again in the morning. - Clean Out the Filter
If you own a sand or DE filter, don’t forget to backwash them. For cartridge filters, remove them and spray clean. To take things up a notch, DE filters need to be thoroughly cleaned twice a year, and there isn’t a better time to do so than during spring cleaning. Remove the grids, spray them clean and reinstall. - Upgrade Your Pool Gear
Sell or throw out old furniture and opt for a fresh patio look this spring. A few added touches like potted plants, a water feature or fire pit can make a world of difference and give your backyard an updated look. Break out the pool toys and clean off and inspect for damage. And don’t forget to stock up on supplies like cleaners, water test kits and new pool toys.
