Protect your pool against evaporation and heat loss with an innovative liquid pool cover. Liquid pool ‘blankets’ are silicone-based products that seal in pool water without the need for a roller or bulky cover.
Pool covers can provide a practical way to guard against evaporation and lock in the warmth generated by a heating system. So, covers for your pool are practical, but not everyone likes the bulk, appearance or hassle of a roll-up cover or blanket. Others avoid standard pool covers because of an unusual pool design. Most pool blankets can only be purchased in standard shapes, so they would not fit natural or freeform styles.
“Some people don’t have room for a roller at the end of their pool and others just find them unsightly,” says Mark Dean of Direct Pool Supplies. “That’s where the liquid pool cover comes into its own.”
What are the benefits of liquid pool covers?
The liquid pool blanket is a relatively new innovation that provides the perfect compromise. The product is a safe, non-toxic, silicone-based liquid that, when added to pool water, creates an invisible film that locks in the temperature and guards against evaporation. Unlike solid pool blankets, liquid covers allow swimmers to dive in at any time.
“When you jump in the pool, you break the surface tension on the cover and it naturally moves to the edge of the pool,” Mark explains. “You don’t even know it’s in there. When you get out, the product moves back over again.”
Do pool covers or blankets really protect my pool from heat loss and evaporation?
Aside from keeping debris out of the pool, conventional pool blankets are most commonly used to keep in the warmth created by heating systems. Whether solar or electric, pool heating can cost a lot of money and the last thing you want is to have the heat drift off into the cool evening air. Liquid pool covers provide similar heat protection, saving up to 40 per cent on heating costs.
“At night time you can often see steam coming off a heated pool and when you add the product, the steam just stops,” says Mark.
The amount of pool water lost in evaporation is quite staggering in some climates and in these water-conscious times, regularly topping up the pool with a hose is a no-no. The liquid pool cover prevents almost all evaporation, saving you money while doing the environment a favour.
What is the best pool cover?
There is a range of different brands of liquid pool covers, and each varies slightly in its makeup. Mark stocks Aquatain, which requires you to add around 25mL of the product to the pool several times a week. With this product priced at around $50 for a 500mL bottle, it works out at $5 week.
There are also automated systems on the market, such as the Hurlcon HeatSaver, which dispense the liquid product into the pool water on a regular basis with a computerised pump. Leaving this system set up and plugged in while you’re away or unable to attend to the pool will ensure the water is regularly protected against evaporation and heat loss.
